Learn Salsa Shines – But First Learn the Basics!

First off, lets answer the question: What are salsa shines? For both leaders and followers, salsa shines are an incorporation of leg/arm motion, body movement/isolation, spins, shoulder rolls, and hand styling into a dance routine. Basically, salsa shines are a way of stylizing and personalizing your dance skills.

While some Latin musicians and performers are convinced that salsa is only a flavor of Latin music rather than a complete and unified type dance, salsa steps and salsa shines do exist that can be performed to the beat of salsa music. Salsa’s popularity is the largest in New York, from Puerto Rican immigrants who mixed Cuban and African influences into their own brand of dance and music. Which is why salsa is named such, after the Spanish sauce that Americans find spicy hot, and mixes in many elements just to make things interesting.

There are many elements to salsa music, and to the salsa shines and dancing than can accompany it, but to actually perform salsa dance is not as difficult as you might imagine. The most basic salsa dance steps are easy to learn, and that’s even an understatement. You don’t have to be an experienced dancer to figure out how to do the most basic steps in salsa dancing. From there, it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump away from some sizzling salsa shines that will light up the dance floor. It goes without saying though that you’ll have to practice!

For On 2 Salsa Steps, there are two measures of salsa steps (and music), both with four beats each. On the first beat, you tap your left foot in place. Some salsa styles will merely ask you to hold the first count, but dancers have found that tapping the foot makes it interesting, and even activates the first foot so that you’re ready to go. On the second count, you actually make a step forward with that left foot. But you can’t go far because, on the third count, you rock back onto the right foot, transferring your weight backwards. Then, on the fourth count, you close your left foot to join your right foot again.

That entire sequence is called the forward basic movement. The next measure of four counts is the backward basic movement, and goes backward instead of forward, stepping right instead of left. So, what happens is you tap your right foot in place on the first count, then make a step backward with that same right foot. On the third count, you rock forward to transfer your weight to the left foot and close your feet together with the right foot on the fourth count. And those are the basic salsa dance steps. Aren’t they easy?

These salsa steps outward from the closed position are called breaks. The breaks are always consistent on the same beat of the music, no matter what digressions and improvisations of the steps are made by the dancers. Breaks are usually where the couples turn or when they try something fancy.

There are many styles of doing these basic dance steps and there are many ways to add some spicy salsa shines into the mix, but as long as you know the basic steps, adapting to the different styles and variations won’t be difficult.

These styles usually vary according to where the breaks are set, also according to the rhythms played, and particularly in which location you find yourself dancing. For example, the basic salsa dance steps are called On 2, because the break is on the second step, or rather, you step on the count of two. These are performed all over the US and in most Latin American countries. But there is also a special style called On 1 practiced in Los Angeles (and throughout other parts of the US West Coast) where the break is done on the count of one, and the hold is done on the count of four.

Once you learn either On1 or On2 salsa dancing, it’s only a matter of practice and creativity before you can start embellishing your style and working some salsa shines into your routine.

There is also a special Cuban style of salsa that is performed with the break going On 3, with the first two counts being a sexy swaying of the body as the weight transfers from one foot to the other. Other popular styles of doing the salsa dance steps are the New York style, Venezolana or Dominicana style, the Power 2 or Razz M’ Tazz style, La Ruedo, Salsa Disco, and the Eddie Romero step, which is his own concoction of a salsified Rumba.

Another reason why this Latin dance is so popular is because the couples doing the salsa dance steps are not required to travel around the room. In fact, couples who hog too much space on the dance floor are seen as rude and inconsiderate show offs. Performing salsa dance steps is fun and flamboyant on its own, it doesn’t take too much for any dancer to look fabulous while dancing the salsa.

Salsa steps are usually performed with a partner, because salsa is essentially a couple dance. Partners hold each other in the so-called closed or European position. This means the man’s right hand is placed on the woman’s back, his arm around her, while the left hand holds the woman’s right hand. The woman’s left hand rests on the man’s right shoulder. Another important point of contact when performing salsa steps is when the man and the woman make eye contact… salsa is all about connection. Whether it be in the closed position or when both partners are grooving to the music without direct contact, there should always be an energy and harmony of connection: the leader, the follower, and the music must all be synchronized.

It is because of this connection that dancers can have their own unique style while still being in partnership with someone else (who also might have a very unique style). In this way, salsa shines can be used to heighten the intensity and performance of a dance while still maintaining that essential bond between dancers.

Learn to salsa dance in the following ways, using the following methods:

1) Salsa Dance Videos – Look online for some instructional dance videos that you can practice at home to. Check out amazon.com for a fairly wide selection.

2) Group or Private latin dance lessons – Find some weekly salsa classes right in your town. Learn from a professional instructor… this will give you some good, realistic practice.

3) Online dance videos – Search the web for either some online membership sites (salsabootcamp.com or bailasociety.com) or just go to youtube (or any other video hosting site) to find some free salsa lessons there.

4) Practice at home… read up about salsa, dance along to some music in your own living room, listen to the music, and get comfortable with the dance on your own.

5) Go out and hit the clubs. Social dancing is a great way to practice your salsa shines and salsa steps. So get out there, find some partners, and have a great time!

How to Dance – The Five Secrets to Learning How to Dance Salsa

Have you ever wanted to learn how to dance salsa? In this article I am going to reveal the five little know secrets that will help you to learn salsa. Salsa dance is not the most difficult dance to master, but it might still feel like an overwhelming task when you are just starting out.

The Secret # 1 – Set Your Intention

Whatever you want to accomplish in life, the number one secret to achieving it is to always first setting your intentions. This is no different in learning how to dance salsa. In fact, there have been entire books written just in the importance of setting your intentions.

Simply start with the end in your mind. Decide to master salsa and you will. After all nothing really happens until you make a firm commitment to yourself. Make up your mind to learn salsa today.

The Secret # 2 – Visualize

After you have sat your intentions on learning how to dance salsa, visualize yourself mastering salsa with ease. Simply close your eyes and imagine yourself dancing salsa skillfully and beautifully. Visualization is very powerful for one simple reason: it really works.

Not only see yourself dancing like the pros, but feel how easy and effortless it is for you to master the dance.

The Secret # 3 – Believe In Yourself

As you do the above visualization exercise you might feel like it is silly. Or you might start to have self-limiting thoughts like "I can’t never really learn how to dance salsa" or "I just won’t ever became good so why even bother". Don’t let yourself believe in your own self criticism and hate.

Most of the time we are our own worst enemy. In fact, did you read the secret # 2 and think, you just could not see yourself dancing like some of the best dancers in the world? Be honest. If you did, you are not alone. But remember that you are in control. Simply fool your brain and yourself. Try it.

The Secret # 4 – Practice, Practice, Practice

After you have sat your intention, visualized your success firmly believing that you can become a great dancer you are already half way to there. Now the only thing that is left is to pick up your dance shoes and get to a dance studio or a salsa club and to get some practice. Pick up or order a salsa DVD, schedule a private lesson with an instructor, or just show up at salsa class somewhere.

The best way to learn to salsa is to practice. When you have learned a move, some dance steps or salsa pattern, simply continue to practice until you have mastered the steps or pattern. If it is simple steps you are learning just put on some salsa music at your home and dance to them as you are doing some daily chores. Or continue to dance with others and practice the patterns you just learned at the club after the class.

The Secret # 5 – Go Back And Repeat These Steps Often

You don’t want set your intentions only once and forget them. There might come times when you might feel like giving up. You might even feel like salsa is just too hard. But this is not true. I promise, anyone can learn it.

It just takes time and discipline like achieving any worthy goal in life. So continue to revisit your intentions at times. You might even find that it was much easier than you thought, in which case you might even want to set your intentions higher, to join a professional dance team, or to find a dedicated dance partner.

The key is, like in salsa, to repeat these steps often and you will be dancing in no time. And there you have it, your five secrets to learning how to dance salsa. I hope to see you on the dance floor soon.

A heel that is too tall is not going to give you the stability that your ankles need while dancing.

A proper heel doesn’t just make your legs look beautiful and more muscular. They actually make you a better dancer! When performing salsa you want to transfer much of your weight off of the backs of your feet and onto the front of your feet. Having a heel gives you a large assist in the weight transfer department.

Lastly, get a pair of salsa shoes with straps that hold your feet in the shoe firmly. You’ll be doing a lot of dancing backwards when performing salsa. A well fitting pair of shoes that are strapped firmly to your feet will give a sense of safety and stability that is absolutely priceless. There is no worse feeling than quickly moving backwards and feeling your shoes sliding forward and feeling like they are pulling off of your feet.

The Styles of Salsa Music

As time passes, all genres of music change, adapt, shift, or fizzle out in exchange for the newer, more refined, more adventurous sound. The development tends to blindly step on the heels of purists but if you want to understand a movement then look at its roots and follow it from there. Salsa music has many sub genres most notable are the ones listed below. Each has its own appeal, flavor, and history, but which one makes you want to dance. There are some that make you want to sit relax and listen to, whilst others will make you want to jump up and shake everything you got. In this lesson you will find examples of the three most popular types of salsa music.

Salsa Clasica

The first style, formed in the late 1960s,  was lead by musical pioneers such as Celia Cruz, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, Hector Lavoe and Tito Puente. The record label of choice for these artists was the Fania record label. Comparable to ‘Motown’, Jerry Masucci and Johnny Pacheco started the label and signed many of the great salsa artists of the time. Even more similar was the fact that they frequently used a ‘house’ band made up of the most talented musicians at the time, called the Fania All-Stars (comparable to the Funk Brothers of Motown). After the hugely successful record Pacheco’s "Cañonazo", Fania blossomed and opened its doors to many other artists and became a titan of music production. Just about all the popular latin artists at the time were Fania artists.

These artists and producers created a style that is the archetype of the genre and used as a basis for newer artists and bands.

Salsa Clásica Albums

Salsa Romantica

In the mid 1980s to 1990s, Romantica emerged from the dwindling popularity of Clásica. At this time Latin Pop and Rock began to explode onto the scene, taking hints from theses artists Romantica followed a sentimental ballad approach to the Afro-Cuban beats. Much of the musical improvisation was lost, as well as the grandly orchestrated arrangements. Lyrics turned from sociopolitical outcry to passionate love songs.

Well-known proponents of this music include Eddie Santiago, Frankie Ruiz, Lalo Rodriguez and Luis Enrique. Opponents of this style, labeled this style as monga (limp or flaccid).

Even today Romantica artists thrive by blurring the lines between genres. The popularity of urban contemporary music, has even led to the fusion of the romantic stylings with reggaeton, evidenced by India’s 2006 Soy Diferente and Andy Montanez Salsa con Reggaeton.

Introduction to Ballet Pointe Shoes

As the name suggests, pointe shoes are worn by ballet dancers to appear light weight and flying like stance. In the history of ballet dancing, it started with the foundation of Royal Academy Of Dance in 1681.
